Hi Victor,

We developed our own plugin to do exactly what we required, and nothing more. We chose that route for ease of maintenance. It also allows us to add new features as the project grows.

The plugin makes simple calls to the API, and makes the data available via custom functions and WordPress short codes.

To follow up on my last comment and the comment left by Olaf C. Derriksson, many browsers now offer a “Reader mode” which allows the user to view the page content in a distraction free mode, showing just the basic content.

Our approach is still to make the website as accessible as possible to the largest number of visitors. However it now means that a well built and accessible site will work with a browser’s reader mode, and there are plugins available which allow customisation of the reader mode styles.

This means users with specific requirements will be able to adjust the alignment in reader mode and view the content exactly how they want, whilst removing any other distracting elements.

Thank you for your interesting comment. As web developers we must try to make our content as accessible as possible to the maximum number of users. That may result in making choices that affect one group of users, to allow the site to be accessible for an even larger group.

For those users who still have issues using a website, we should make it easy for them to adjust just as you have done with your custom style sheet. We can do this be ensuring we follow as many accessibility guide lines as possible and write clean semantic code that allows users to modify it where required.

As an OCD sufferer I can’t stand unjustified text. Only 1.2% of British population is thought to have OCD, and some of us are vision impared or dyslexic, and I’m not sure which impairment takes precedence in those cases.

As a smaller minority we have to take care of ourselves and rely on custom personal stylesheets fixing your (designers’) web. I have just read your article properly justified and seen no rivers of distracting whitespace. On the other hand if I were to turn off my stylesheet, I would be unable to read the paragraphs because the right edge would consume all of my attention.

Thank you for posting this article. I now have something clear succinct, and convincing to back up the argument for not using justified text in websites.

I like justified text, and wondered why no one is using it in their websites. Thanks for addressing this point.
